Mildred F. Schmitz, 95, of Parsons, passed away at 12:25 a.m., Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Parsons Presbyterian Manor. She was born September 3, 1919 in McLoud, Oklahoma to Oren and Ethel (Miller) Harper. As a young child, she moved with her family to Caldwell, Kansas where she grew up and attended school. On October 6, 1940, she and LaVern R. Schmitz were married at the United Methodist Church in Caldwell. The couple farmed in Braman, Oklahoma for ten years before moving to rural Oswego in 1951. She worked alongside her husband on the farm and in his photography business for many years and also worked as a seamstress at Broderick's garment factory in Parsons until retiring. After retiring in December of 2000, the couple moved to Parsons. Mr. Schmitz preceded her in death on September 10, 2003. She was always a faithful member of her church. She was a current member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Parsons, the Growing Christians Sunday School class, and enjoyed bible study. She had also attended church in Caldwell, Labette City, and Oswego. Mildred enjoyed sewing for her grandchildren, gardening, reading, and baking cookies for youth groups. She had also served as 4-H leader in earlier years. Survivors include: Two Sons – Curtis R. Schmitz and his wife, Beverly Carl Junction, MO Jim Schmitz and his wife, Terri Parsons, KS Five Grandchildren – Kimberly Kurtz and her husband, Jay; Kelly Chapman and her husband, Frank; Cameron Schmitz, Ryan Schmitz and his wife, Shelly; Gavin Schmitz and his wife, Melanie Eight Great-Grandchildren – Jacob, Carollyn, Andrea, William, Matthew, Addison, Madigan and Mason One Sister – Alene Pearson Webb City, MO In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harold; and one sister, Loral. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 29, 2015 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Wesley United Methodist Church.
