Mirl E. Jones, 78, of Erie, died at 8:47 a.m., Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born June 20, 1935 in Montana, Kansas to Glenn and Verda Varyle (Jones) Jones. As a young boy, he grew up in the Montana, Parsons, Dennis and Morehead areas.
Following high school, he traveled across the United States while working as a farmhand. He then served in the United States Air Force. After his honorable discharge from the service, he worked throughout the United States as a heavy equipment operator. He then settled in McCune while working as a boiler fireman for 30 years at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant until retiring.
Mirl was a member of the George L. Hendricks Post No. 102 American Legion of Erie. He attended the Temple Baptist Church in Erie and enjoyed history, reading and tinkering at the farm.
In 1961, he and Nettie Lou Hayden were married in Miami, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death in May of 1983.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the Temple Baptist Church in Erie. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Monday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
