Mitchell Lee Wood of McAlester, OK died Monday, February 20, 2017 at Okaloosa County Medical Center in Pensacola, Florida. He was born October 25, 1991 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Gloria Newbanks Wood and Jeffrey Wood. He moved to the McAlester area in 1997 with his mother and brother. He attended Savanna Elementary, Will Rogers Elementary, Puterbaugh Middle School, and McAlester High School graduating with the Class of 2010. He played little league football, baseball, and basketball. He was a member of Puterbaugh 6, 7 and 8 grades band, 4 years with MHS Buffalo Football and was elected as an Offensive Lineman in 2007.
Mitchell married Shannon Katlyn Beers of Wilburton Oklahoma on August 14, 2015. They made their home in McAlester with their daughter Alexis. He held various jobs ending as an explosive worker at McAlester Army Ammunition Plant.
Survivors include his wife Shannon Wood and daughter Alexis of Wilburton OK; mother Gloria Newbanks Wood, of McAlester OK; father, Jeffrey Wood, of California; brothers Matthew and Samantha Perry of McAlester and Robbie Wood of St Louis, MO; nephew and niece, Clayton and Christine Perry, of McAlester, OK; and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law; paternal grandparents, Tom and Jolene Wood, of Hutchinson KS, and Vonda Hodges of Copan, OK; aunt, Anita Newbanks Pilkington, of Mound Valley, KS; uncle, Leon and Louise Newbanks, of Dale City, VA; and numerous cousins.
Mitchell was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Ray Wood; brother-in-law, Travis Lee Beers; maternal grandparents, Lloyd Clinton Newbanks and Harold & Mildred (Newbanks) Gray; maternal great-grandparents, Jess & Goldie Newbanks and Charley and Anna Walter; paternal great-grandparents Charlie and Novella Wood and Raymond and Lucille Hodges; cousin Danny Lee Pilkington; and uncles, Terry Wood and Randy Wood.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the 831 Oklahoma Mission Church located at 309 W. Miami Avenue in McAlester Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to assist with final expenses. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 325, Altamont, KS 67330.
