Myrle E. Spencer, 86, former longtime Oswego and Altamont resident, passed away at 3:55 p.m., Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the Presbyterian Manor Nursing Home in Parsons. He was born February 8, 1926 near Bartlett, Kansas to Ernest and Marie (Allison) Spencer. He grew up and attended school in the rural Edna, Kansas area and graduated from high school at the Labette County Community High School in Altamont in 1943. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II . Following his military service, he worked from 1946 to 1959 at the former Mike Glore Implement Co. in Oswego. In 1959 he went to work at the Asbury Implement Co. in Edna as a parts manager. He later purchased interest in the dealership and it was renamed Asbury-Spencer Implement and later the Spencer Implement Co. He retired in 1990. He enjoyed traveling, especially on Good Will Tours bus trips. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing and restoring John Deere tractors. In 1968, he was awarded a trip to Bermuda for John Deere tractor sales. In the past he had been a member of the Oswego United Methodist Church and more recently had been a member of the Altamont United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Oswego. Myrle was united in marriage to Carmen Rose Haggard on September 4, 1943 at Columbus, Kansas. The couple had recently celebrated 69 years of marriage. Mrs. Spencer survives of the home. Additional survivors include one son, Tony Spencer of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters, Cheryl Jinks and her husband, Jerry of Normal, Illinois and Anne Weaver and her husband, Ross of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Jeff Jinks, Angela Jinks-Almeda, and Hannah Weaver; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Almeda, Nathan Almeda, Ashley Jinks and Rafael Matt-Jinks; one brother, Marvin Spencer and his wife, Susie of Wichita, Kansas; one sister, Gerry Stotts and her husband, Clarence of Parsons; five half-brothers, Rick Spencer of Mound Valley, Kansas, Bob Spencer of Bartlett, Kansas, Bill Spencer of Altamont, Kansas, Randy Spencer of Altamont, Kansas and Charlie Spencer of Edna, Kansas; one half-sister, Shirley Carson of Parsons, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 20, 2012 at the Altamont United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Oswego Cemetery at Oswego, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
