Nellie Marie Leon, 70, of Mound Valley, died at 4:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at her home. She had been in failing health.

She was born December 13, 1936, in Jefferson, Kansas, to Jasper "Jack" and Laura Belle (Miller) Smith. She grew up and attended schools in Jefferson and Coffeyville.

For a time, she worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant and the former Fred Ronald's Manufacturing Company, both in Parsons. She then began working at Automotive Controls Company in Independence, where she retired, following 25 years of service.

She and Fidel Leon were married July 28, 1963, in Miami, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death August 13, 2002.

She was an avid quilter and enjoyed teaching quilting. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons, the SEK Crazy Quilters Guild in Independence and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Parsons.

One Daughter - Cheryl Callaway and her husband, Tim of the home
One Granddaughter – Elena Blackburn
One Brother - Frank Smith Wray, CO

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 11, 2007, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. A private service will be held by the family with burial in the Mound Valley Cemetery.
