Paul Dudley Robbins, 62, of Parsons, died at 12:42 P.M. Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, after a long illness with cancer.
He was born March 2, 1952, at Parsons, a son of Lee and Lorene Robbins.
He was educated in the Parsons school system and graduated from Parsons Senior High School in 1970, the valedictorian of his class.
A brilliant student, he graduated from the University of Kansas in 1974 with a B.A. in Biology "With Highest Distinction" and "Departmental Honors in Biology." He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, one of 47 members elected in 1974. He was a member of the Kansas Chapter of Delta Chi Fraternity.
He continued his education at Pittsburg State University, in Pittsburg, Ks. He graduated from that school with a B.A. and a M.S. in Mathematics, where he was elected to Kappa Mu Epsilon and Alpha Mu Gamma, honor societies, among his other academic distinctions.
He attended the University of Arizona on a fellowship, to do course work in that university's Ph.D. program in agricultural and biosystems engineering.
He worked at the K.U. Research Center in Kansas City, the Parsons Training Center, the Cherryvale Citizen, taught various university classes, and taught at Independence Community College.
He was principled and independent in his thinking and actions. He understood the power and benefits of science and rejected dogmatic and extreme ideological thinking of all types, believing that this thinking creates cultural and intellectual bigotry and intolerance between people of different faiths and beliefs. He was compassionate and understood the responsibility of humanity to protect the environment and all of its life forms. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a sharp wit.
He was a life-long Democrat. He professed a faith in a liberal philosophy of government that uses its authority within the framework of a democratically-constituted government to benefit American society, the environment, and the less fortunate.
He enjoyed music and loved to dance. He played the violin and several other instruments. He performed with the Parsons Community Orchestra and Chorus. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Parsons Wesley Church, and transferred his church membership to Tucson, Arizona.
He was very appreciative of the dedication and care given to him in his lengthy illness by the doctors and staff of Via Christi in Pittsburg; the care providers of Gran Villa Assisted Living in Pittsburg; his sister-in law, Susie Robbins, his mother, Lorene, and his niece Allison Robbins; and the physicians, nurses, and staff at Kansas Medical Center for their professionalism and care.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Survivors include his mother, Lorene Robbins of Parsons; his brother Stephen Robbins and his wife, Susie, of Red Lodge, Montana; his niece Allison Robbins of Warrensburg, Mo; his nephew Andrew and his wife Amber Robbins, and their two children, Lincoln Lee and Zia of Ranchester, Wyoming; numerous cousins; and his devoted Dachshund, Carrie.
