Pearl M. Modica, 83, of Walnut, Kansas, died at 10:20 p.m., Sunday, in the Emergency Room at Labette Health.
She was born January 12, 1928, to Richard and Caroline (Elmer) Shively in the family home at Walnut that was built by her grandfather and where she lived her entire life. As a young girl, she grew up in Walnut and was a graduate of Walnut High School.
On April 12, 1950, she and Jack Modica were married in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut.
She worked two years at the Burlington Factory in Chanute and was employed 15 years by USD 248 in the Walnut school cafeteria.
She was a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie, and a former member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut, and the Altar Society at both churches. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Walnut Ruritan Club where she had served as vice president and secretary. She also served as a project leader and community leader in Walnut Wonder Workers 4-H Club over 20 years.

Three Daughters – Margaret L. "Maggi" Modica Dallas, TX
Shirley A. Johnson and husband, Ken Parsons, KS
Carolyn J. Grillot and husband, Dave Pittsburg, KS
Six Grandchildren – Scott Grillot, Adam Grillot and wife, Ashley; Alan Grillot, Sarah Modica, Austin Johnson and Kendra Johnson
Two Great-Grandchildren – Spencer Grillot and Robyn Grillot
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Robert Shively.
The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 5, 2011, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Walnut. The rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the church where the family will receive friends immediately following the rosary in Parish Hall.
