Peggy J. Smith, 84, formerly of Chetopa, passed away at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, March 22, 2020, at Evergreen Hospice Care in Olathe, Kansas.
Peggy June Thompson was born on March 9, 1936, to Charles Arthur and Mabel Olive (Logan) Thompson in Treece, Kansas. As a young girl, she grew up and attended school in the Melrose area. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1954.
On September 6, 1953, she was united in marriage to James R. "Jim Bob" Smith in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Following their marriage, they lived in Chetopa for several years until moving to Kansas City, Kansas in 1962. In 1976, they moved to Beaumont, Texas and later Seguin, Texas. The couple lived in Kansas City from 1985 to 2003, during which time Peggy worked at the Lenexa Kmart. Following their retirement, they returned to Chetopa. Peggy moved to the Kansas City area to be closer to her children after Jim Bob passed away on October 17, 2014.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Kansas City and the Community Bible Church in Chetopa. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. Peggy also enjoyed macramé, making stained glass, growing flowers, and loved collecting dolls and angel statues.
Survivors include:
One Son – James Smith and his wife, Rose, of Paola, Kansas
One Daughter – Cheryle Hansen and her husband, Doug, of Kansas City, Kansas
Seven Grandchildren – Krystal Hardman, Mike Smith, Melissa Noernberg, Calie Smith, Jamie Martin, Cassie Joly and Tyler Hansen
Twelve Great-Grandchildren
One Sister – Joan Schultz of Vinita, Oklahoma
She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. "Jim Bob" Smith; two brothers, Freddie Thompson and Charles Thompson; three sisters, Barbara Richardson, Mamie Robinette and Twyla Hawkins.
There will be a private family service Saturday, March 28, 2020, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will follow at Oakhill Cemetery in Chetopa. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
