Petra A. Carrillo, 87, of Parsons, died at 5:15 p.m., Monday, May 30, 2011, at Elm Haven West Nursing Home. She had been in failing health.
She was born July 2, 1923, in Parsons, Kansas, to Francisco and Rosa (Ramirez) Romero. She grew up and attended schools in Parsons and was a graduate of Parsons East High School.
During World War II, she worked one year at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant before attending St. Mary of the Plains College where she received her nursing education. After earning her nursing degree, she worked 10 years as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Parsons and, through the years, received great pleasure in visiting with the parents of babies she helped deliver while working at the hospital. She then began her 30-year employment at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center where she worked as a registered nurse until retiring.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons, its Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, VOZ, VFW Auxiliary, Elk Ladies, Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and the American Red Cross.
She and Eleuterio "Lou" Carrillo were married December 27, 1948, at Our Lady of Victory Church in Parsons. They later divorced.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Jesse Romero; two sisters, Angie Ramirez and Aurora Borgas; and one son, Lourey Carrillo.
The funeral Mass will held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 3, 2011, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons where the family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
