Chanute

Rev. R. A. Pefley, 87, of Chanute, passed away around 6:40 p.m., Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri

He was born to William "Bill" Pefley and Ora Etta (Cannon) Pefley on September 1, 1929 on a farm south of Mound Valley, Kansas. He grew up and attended school there. Following high school, he entered the United States Navy and served as a radioman on the USS Leo and the USS Duluth from 1948 to 1949.

He was united in marriage to Gloria G. Kober on May 12, 1949 at the First Baptist Church at Mound Valley. She preceded him in death on May 5, 2014. Following their marriage, they lived for a short time in San Francisco, California while he served in the Navy.

Following his discharge, they returned to Kansas where he became a minister in 1951. He served as minister at Elk City, Yates Center, Moran, Edna and Chanute. In 1968, he started the Old Country Church Evangelistic Enterprises which is now known as the Faith Bible Church in Chanute, Kansas. He had a radio and prison ministry for several years while he had the Old Country Church.

He enjoyed fishing, playing guitar, singing and mining for rocks. He also enjoyed mowing his yard. He always enjoyed helping people and telling jokes and stories.

Survivors include one son, Steve Pefley and his wife, Cindy of Cherryvale, Kansas; one daughter, Diane Pefley Crawford and her husband, Vearl of Moses Lake, Washington; Seven grandchildren and Fifteen great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Gloria, he was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Debra Bishop who passed away in 2009 as well a three sisters, Willie Maxine Miller, Alma Pauline Pefley and Lavetras Pefley.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at the First Baptist Church Annex Building at the corner of Forest and Elm Street in Chanute. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at the Annex Building. Following the funeral, burial will take place at the Mound Valley Cemetery in Mound Valley, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Bible Church in Chanute. Memorials may be left at the church or mailed to the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O.
