Ramona J. (Strickland) Gwartney, 71, of Chetopa, died at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at her home.

She was born December 9, 1937, in Oswego, Kansas, to Walter and Minnie Belle (Needham) Strickland. She grew up and attended schools in Chetopa where she participated in basketball and was a 1955 graduate of Chetopa High School. She later attended and graduated from Draughn School of Business in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

She worked as a psychiatric nurse at Eastern State Hospital in Vinita, Oklahoma, for a number of years, and later moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she was employed by the City of San Antonio Motor Vehicle Division, retiring from there in 1988.

In younger years, Ramona was barrel-racing queen at the Labette County Fair. She loved photography and especially enjoyed knitting and reading.

She and Marvin Stanley were married in 1955. He preceded her in death. In August 1961, she and Jerry Spunaugle were married. They later divorced. She and Jim Gwartney were married in July 1989. He survives of the home.

She was preceded in death by a stillborn daughter, Christie Lynn Smith, in 1972.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 19, 2009, at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.
