Ray Francis Turner, 86, of Independence, Kansas, went to Heaven at 11:35 p.m., Wednesday, May 5, 2010.
Ray and twin, Roy, were born at home in Stark City, Missouri, June 15, 1923, to John Riley and Sarah Francis (Bowman) Turner. He worked on his parents' farm through the depression years.
Ray married Janie Odessa Cargile on August 18, 1945, in Columbus, Kansas. He drove a Dr Pepper (his lifelong favorite drink) truck. While living in the Granby/Monett area, they had two boys, Otis, in 1947, and Ray Dean, in 1948. In 1952, they moved to Port Angeles, Washington, where Ray drove a truck for Peninsula Freight Lines. He also drove a Greyhound bus on weekends and holidays. While in Port Angeles, they had a daughter, Patty, in 1956. The family moved to Kansas in 1959 where he worked for Ruan Transport for 22 years as driver and trainer. He was awarded a million miles safe driving award. He retired in 1985.
He enjoyed gardening with his beloved Farmall tractor. He also enjoyed camping, especially with his brother, Gene, and wife Christine (Janie's sister), and shared anniversary camping trips with cousins Wayne and Charlene Brust.
He was loved very much by his family and all who knew him. He was a man of high integrity and loved the Lord. He thoroughly enjoyed teasing and joking with everyone he knew and sometimes those he didn't know.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Janie Odessa Turner; Brother, Gene Turner of Granby, MO; children, Otis Turner and wife Pat of Blue Springs, MO, Ray Dean Turner and wife, Sherry of Independence, KS; and Patty (Turner) Johnston and husband Doug Johnston of Lee's Summit, MO. He was proud of his 12 grandchildren, Jeremy Turner, Eric Turner, Micah Dawn Slavens, Shawna Bowers, Matthew Turner, Caroline Turner, John Turner, Jason Turner, Tony Turner, Dougie Johnston, Jana Lee Johnston, and Benjamin Johnston; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Riley and Sarah Francis Turner; and two brothers, Leo and twin, Roy.
