Ray C. Wilson

Ray C. Wilson, 86, of Chetopa, died at 6:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Chetopa Manor Nursing Home.

He was born February 19, 1927, in rural Chetopa, Kansas, to Clinton and Anna (Gail) Wilson. As a young boy, he attended rural grade schools and was a 1944 graduate of Labette County Community High School in Altamont.

After high school graduation, he worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant before serving in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked for a time at the Katy Railroad. He then moved to Wichita where he worked as a tool and die maker and quality control inspector at Boeing for 28 years until retiring in 1982.


He attended the United Methodist Church and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #10508, both in Chetopa. He enjoyed visiting with friends, fishing, gardening and, in earlier years, water skiing.

He and Christine Braden were married January 15, 1945. They later divorced.

Survivors include:
One Son – Melvin Wilson Joplin, MO
One Daughter – Kate Nixon and husband, Bob Shell Knob, MO
Three Grandchildren – Sheri Darnell, Clint Wilson and Phil Nixon
Six Great-Grandchildren – Curtis Rowden, Desiree Nixon, Victoria Wilson, Aurora Wilson, Lyndsey Darnell and Jeri Darnell.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Merwin Wilson; two sisters, Gail Cunningham and Theda Wilson; and one son, Donald Wilson.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Lake Creek Cemetery near Bartlett. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m., on Saturday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Friends may call at their convenience from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., on Friday, at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Chetopa Manor. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 346, Chetopa, KS 67336.
