Rex J Sumpter, 68, of Humboldt, Kansas, died at 12:01 a.m., Sunday, February 14, 2010, at Heritage Health Care Center in Chanute. He had been in failing health.
He was born April 26, 1941, in Parsons, Kansas, to Jack Allen and Marie Katherine (Dowdy) Sumpter. As a young boy, he grew up in Parsons where he attended schools.
Through the years he lived in Oswego, Parsons, Altamont, Ottawa, Chanute, and most recently, Humboldt. In earlier years, he worked in Research and Development at Glen Berry Manufacturing Company in Chetopa, Fred Ronald Manufacturing Company and Signature Sportswear, both in Parsons, the National Garment Factory in Chanute, and National Mills Manufacturing Company in Pittsburg until retirement in 1998.
He was a member of Big Hill Bass Masters and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and had traveled extensively. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He and Twyla Mae Nading were married March 25, 1961, in Parsons. She preceded him in death May 2, 1997. On April 4, 2009, he and Joan Anne (Mathewson) Law were married in Chanute. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jerry, Louie and Jack Sumpter, Jr.; one sister, Sally Simpson; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
