Rural Oswego

Richard D. Falkenstien, 82, longtime farmer and rancher of rural Oswego, passed away at 9:05 p.m., Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Labette Health in Parsons. His death followed a valiant struggle with cancer and related illnesses.

He was born August 13, 1933 in Chetopa, Kansas to Miles and Maggie (Smith) Falkenstien. In 1951, Richard graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont where he had been active in FFA and 4-H. After serving in the United States Army for two years, he attended Pittsburg State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1961. He had been a member of the Phi Lambda Chi Fraternity at Pittsburg State University. Following his college graduation, he returned to the family farm where worked along-side his father.

He and Jane Hayes were married August 21, 1965 in Coffeyville, Kansas. Following marriage, they lived and farmed in the rural Bartlett area throughout the rest of his life. For the past 15 years, he and his wife, Jane, had enjoyed spending time at their winter home at the Fun and Sun Resort in San Benito, Texas. He enjoyed shooting pool, country western dances, and hosting cookouts for his winter Texas friends. Before his health failed, he had also enjoyed shooting clay targets at Claythorne Lodge. He was member of the Bartlett Co-op Association and Farm Bureau.

Rich Falkenstien and Melissa Rural Bartlett, KS
Seven Grandchildren - Whitney Shaw and her husband, Andy
Kinsley, Delancy, Erin, Luke, Trace and Jaci Falkenstien
One Sister – Donna Ward Belleville, KS

He was preceded in death by his father, Miles Falkenstien, on June 8, 2000; and his mother, Maggie Falkenstien, on August 27, 1992.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 21, 2015 at the Bartlett Christian Church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Sunday, at the Bartlett Christian Church.
