Richard E. Parks

Richard E. Parks, 91, of rural Cherryvale, passed away at 8:53 p.m., Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Labette Health in Parsons.

He was born January 27, 1926 in Kingman County, Kansas to Ivan M. and Grace (Allen) Parks.  As a small child, he moved with his family to the Blackwell, Oklahoma area and attended Kay County, Oklahoma schools.  He later moved to Labette County, Kansas where he graduated in 1944 from Labette County Community High School in Altamont.

He was a member of the Mound Valley United Methodist Church.  Richard especially enjoyed his lifelong career of farming and ranching. He was the last remaining charter member of the Altamont Saddle Club and in earlier years enjoyed calf roping, pole bending, and wild cow milking.  He had also taught 4-H horsemanship and leadership.

He and Margaret M. May were married November 3, 1946.  They later divorced.  On January 27, 1969, he and Margaret E. (Sutton) Miller were married at the Mound Valley United Methodist Church.

Survivors include:

One Daughter – Virginia L. Swanwick of Grapevine, TX

One Grandson – E. Mark Swanwick of Irving, TX

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Margaret M. Parks; second wife, Margaret E. Parks; daughter, Marlys J. Parks; three brothers, Melvin Casey, Don DeLester, and Kenny DeLester; and one sister, Dorothy Stewart.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Mound Valley United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale.  The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Thursday, at the church.
