Robert Leroy Burnett, 86, of Oswego, formerly a longtime resident of Galesburg, passed away at 6:55 p.m., Friday, July 7, 2023, at Oswego Health and Rehab.
Robert Leroy Burnett was born on October 24, 1936, to Elmer Burnett and Vivian (Matthews) Burnett in Kismet, Kansas. He grew up and attended school, graduating from Kismet High School.
Throughout his working career, Robert worked at various jobs. He worked as an airplane mechanic while he was in the Air Force and took great pride in his work. He worked as an oil field technician for over 36 years. Upon retirement, Robert worked at Walmart where he had a chance to be around people and greet them before they would shop.
Robert was a Christian and was a member of the Galesburg Christian Church. His favorite past times included fishing, crafts, & gardening, where he had his own green house and a constant supply of fresh produce. He especially loved spending time with his family. Robert was a simple man. He was not caught up in a materialistic world. He was a prankster, always loved to make others laugh. He was proud of his achievements, but still was a humble man who was always willing to help
Robert married Shirley May (Bloom) and to this union they had one son. They later divorced. He was married to Elsie Irene (Frederick) who he had celebrated 34 years together until her passing in May 2021.
Survivors include:
One son – Daniel (Angela) Burnett of Urbana, Ohio
Step-son – Earl K. Taylor of Idaho
One Sister- LaVera Beard of Belpre, Kansas
Five grandchildren – Christopher (Sarah) Burnett, Brittany Burnett, Joshua (Kira) Burnett, Jessica (Ryan) Longyear and Courtney (Dwight) Miller.
Fifteen great-grandchildren
Three great-great-grandchild
He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers and three sisters.
Cremation was chosen. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to the Parsons VFW Post 704. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
