Robert I. Dorris, 82, of Erie, Kansas, went home to be with God on Saturday, November 17, 2007.
He was born in Guymon, Oklahoma, on May 8, 1925, to Ira and Nannie (Morrow) Dorris. He joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Princeton, in the Pacific Theatre until the ship was sunk in The Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 24, 1944. He later served on the USS Siboney.
Upon his discharge from the Navy, he moved to Kansas, where he met and later married Elveta Newberry on November 14, 1949. She survives of the home.
They lived on a farm near Galesburg for a short time and then moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked in test flight at General Dynamics. They later returned to rural Erie.
In 1972, Bob trusted Christ as his Savior and remained faithful in church. He particularly enjoyed working with young people. At the time of his death, his home church was the First Baptist Church of Erie. His hobby was collecting rocks and minerals. In his later years, he was widely known for his large metal dinosaur sculptures.

One Son - Mike Dorris, Chanute, KS;
Two Daughters – Nancy Wolfe and her husband, Ernie, Rockville, MD;
Jennifer Dorris, Seabrook, MD;
Three Grandsons – Jeff Wolfe, Rob Wolfe and Adrian Dorris
Two Great-Granddaughters – Brennan Wolfe and Zoe Dorris.
He was also blessed to have many beloved extended family members and special friends. Among these were Ray, Martha, Megan and Ryan Hizey; and Joe Thornton and his children, Matthew, Joshua, Julie, Rachel, Hannah, Adam, Emily and Harmony.
A private graveside service is scheduled at Dunkard Cemetery. Friends may call at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons after 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 19, 2007.
