Rocky R. Starmer, 56, of Altamont, died at 7:03 a.m., Thursday, December 4, 2014 at the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. He was born March 28, 1958 at Parsons, Kansas to Garry R. and Helen M. (Colwell) Starmer. He grew up in the Angola, Edna and Altamont areas and attended school there. He attended the Labette County High School at Altamont until moving to Fredonia where he graduated from high school there in 1976. Following high school he attended the Labette Community College in Parsons, where he wrestled and the Independence Community College where he played football on the varsity team. Rocky was an excellent wrestler and while he served in the United States Army, he was named to the All-Army Wrestling Squad and was training for a position in the 1980 Summer Olympics Wrestling Team when the United States decided to boycott the Olympics in Moscow. Rocky always enjoyed coaching youth wrestling and football teams. He was also an avid bowler and enjoyed fishing. As a young person, he had attended the Angola United Methodist Church. On August 12, 1976, he was married to Sharon S. Young at Miami, Oklahoma. She survives, of the home. Survivors: Wife: Sharon – of the home One Son: Michael Starmer of Edna, Kansas Two Daughters: Crystal Waun and her husband Lee of Altamont, Kansas Helen Robertson and her husband Joe of Altamont, Kansas Four Grandchildren: James Clarenson, Joseph Robertson, Sterling Robertson and Benjamin Clarenson Mother and Step-Father: Helen and Earl Johnson of Edna, Kansas One Sister: Sharon Kuehn and her husband Danny of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma One Step-Sister: Kim Comeaux of rural Edna, Kansas In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Shanna Mae and a step-brother, Chad Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont with Pastor Jack Blackwell officiating. Following the funeral, cremation will take place. The family will receive friends and the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3:00 p.m., Monday. Memorial contributions are suggested to a fund for his grandchildren's education.
