Ronald D. "Ron" Cherry, 62, of Parsons, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at 9:08 p.m., Friday, August 22, 2014 at Labette Health hospital in Parsons.
Ron was born November 20, 1951 at Girard, Kansas to Marvin and Alice (Burns) Cherry. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Parsons where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from the Parsons High School in 1969. He later attended the Pittsburg State University where he received his Bachelor's of Science degree.
Ron began his career at the Ruskin Manufacturing Company of Parsons in 1975. Ron worked at Ruskin's for over 36 years until his retirement as a plant foreman in 2011. Following his retirement, Ron began working as a rental property manager which he continued until retiring due to ill health earlier this year.
Ron always enjoyed participating in sports and was an avid bowler and softball player for many years. He was known to many of his teammates as "Dukes". Ron also enjoyed playing golf.
Ron was an active member of the Parsons Church of the Nazarene and had been on the church board there for many years as well as the church treasurer for several years. Ron had served as a teacher for various Sunday School classes including the "Special Disciples" class and had helped teach Vacation Bible School over the years. Ron had also coached girls softball teams and boys basketball teams for the church.
Ron was united in marriage to Lynne R. Wright on October 25, 1974 in Parsons. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include one daughter, Ragan Schubert and her husband, Keith of Peoria, Arizona; one son, Shane Cherry and his wife, Lynette of Pueblo, Colorado; four grandchildren, Anna and Amos Schubert and Autumn and Cole Cherry; his mother, Alice Cherry of Olathe, Kansas; one brother, John Cherry and his wife, Dianne of Texarkana, Texas; two sisters, Becky Sutton and her husband, David of Nixa, Missouri and Gwen Wilmoth and her husband, Mike of Olathe, Kansas as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin L. Cherry who passed away in December of 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at the Parsons Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery at Parsons. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m until 4 p.m., on Tuesday when the casket will be moved to the church for the evening visitation. The family will receive friends at the Church from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday.
