Roscoe W. Baker

January 8, 1933 — March 4, 2015

Rural Bartlett

Roscoe W. Baker, 82, of rural Bartlett, went home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.

He was born January 8, 1933, in Edna, Kansas to Roscoe C. and Anita (Storm) Baker. Roscoe was a 1952 graduate of Edna High School. Following high school, Roscoe attended Coffeyville Jr. College where he played football one year.

Roscoe served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 11th Airborne Division while stationed in Germany. In April of 1963, he was honorably discharged.

At the age of 12, he worked as a janitor at the First National Bank in Edna. In later years, he worked for Parkersburg Rig and Reel Company, as a machinist for Charles Wheatly Valve Company, as a tooling machinist at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, as a bus driver for Unified School District No. 506, as an ambulance driver and worked in the Edna funeral home, as a highway patrolman for the State of Kansas, and as an officer at Pratt City. He also worked as a sheet metal inspector for McDonnell Aircraft of St. Louis, Missouri, and as a sheet metal assembler and crew chief at Continental Can of Coffeyville.

In 1973, Roscoe earned his Bachelor of Science degree, his Master's degree in 1974, and in 1978 an Ed.S. in Psychology from Pittsburg State University. Roscoe was the CIT coordinator at Parsons High School and Machine Shop, and was instructor at the SEK Area Vocational Technical School in Columbus, Kansas. In 1981, he was certified in Reality Therapy and, for several years, had a private counseling practice in Atchison. He worked as a school psychologist in Iowa, Atchison, Kansas, and at the High Plains Co-op in Ulysses, Kansas, until his retirement in June of 1992.

He served on the Kansas Governor's Commission on Parent Education, and also on the Domestic Violence Task Force for the State of Kansas while working. Since 1993, he was a member of The Gideons International. He was also a member of the Baptist Church, the NRA, and served as the Republican Hackberry Township Committeeman. For the past three years, he enjoyed attending the Bartlett United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed writing poetry, reading, singing, hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking. In earlier years, he raised, trained and sold bird dogs. He took great pride in being able to harvest fallen trees from his farm to build things for his family and friends. He especially enjoyed singing and leading congregational singing in many of the churches he attended over the years. He also enjoyed teaching the Bible, especially prophecy.

He had fun traveling to 42 states, Alaska and Canada four times, and to Mexico. During the travel times to Canada and Alaska, he and his wife, Pam, distributed over 500 Gideon Personal Worker Testaments. He also had the privilege of speaking in churches in the city of Hay River in Canada. Roscoe didn't have trouble sharing Christ with strangers or giving them a Gideon Personal Worker Testament. The one thing he wanted to do in life was to be a missionary for our Lord. He tried to live by the saying, "You can't out-give the Lord." Roscoe would say, "If what you are doing isn't working…stop doing it."

In July of 1952, he and Marilyn Carney were married. To this union, four children, Andrew, Daniel, Lori and Beth, were born. She preceded him in death on June 22, 1984. On January 24, 1987, he and Pam (Wallace) Coonrod were married. She survives of the home.
