Sigsbee B. "Sig" Carey

Sigsbee B. "Sig" Carey, 89, of Parsons, died at 11:27 a.m., Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in the emergency room at Labette Health. He had been in his usual health and death was not expected.

He was born December 9, 1920, in Grove, Oklahoma to Bruce Freeman and Ethel (Layman) Carey. He grew up in Grove where he attended schools.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in the 88th Infantry Division. While serving 23 months in the European Theater of Operations, he participated in the campaigns of Northern Apennines, Po Valley and Rome-Arno. Upon his honorable discharge on October 31, 1945, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, EAME Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the American Service Medal.

After serving his country, he returned to his hometown of Grove. He and Louise Morrow were married April 20, 1946. The couple moved to Parsons in 1950 where he worked at Par Kan Manufacturing Company several years and Power Flame, Inc. until retirement.

He had attended Church of the Nazarene in Parsons and enjoyed motorcycle riding, fishing, camping, and tinkering with things.

Carl Carey Parsons, KS
William "Bill" Carey and wife, Dianne Owasso, OK
Three Grandchildren – Stacey Spence and husband, Adam
Jessica Carey and Nathan Carey
One Great-Grandson – Logan Spence
One Sister – Carmoletta Peck White Oak, OK

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Carey, on June 16, 1997; one brother, George Edmond Carey; and one sister, Alice Barnett.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the Church of the Nazarene in Parsons. Burial will be in East Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Friday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
