Steven S. Sulenes, 77, of Parsons, passed away the morning of Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Elm Haven Nursing Home in Parsons.
Steven Sample Sulenes was born on January 25, 1947, to Bart Leonard and Anna Jeanette (Sample) Sulenes in Manhattan, Kansas. He grew up and attended school in Kansas City, Missouri, where he graduated from high school.
Following high school, he moved to Michigan. From 1966 to 1969, Steven served in the United States Army in Vietnam and Germany. Upon being honorably discharged, Steven settled in Kingman County, Kansas. In 1971, he began working in the oil fields in the Great Bend area. He moved to Parsons in 1985 and earned an associate's degree from Labette Community College in 1987. From 1994 to 2007, Steven worked at Grandview Products.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Parsons.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Telling stories, reading, and watching the History Channel and Old Western shows and movies were also favorite past times. Steven was a proud veteran, who dearly loved his country.

One daughter – Stephanie Sulenes Frost of Ashville, North Carolina
Two step-children – Franklin Ray Sulenes of Erie, Kansas
Lisa Ann Sulenes of Ashville, North Carolina
Numerous cousins, including John Walter Ellis and Martha Elaine Ellis of Wichita, Kansas; Ronald Ferguson Beard of Leavenworth, Kansas; and Dr. Brian Compton of Pleasant Valley, Missouri
Long-time friend – Mary Ann Keller of Parsons, Kansas
Both of Steven's great-grandfathers, C.W. Sample and David Walter were founders of the State Bank of Kingman, now Kanza Bank, and his grandfather, Walton Carr Sample, worked at the bank for 50 years and was loved by all. He and his cousins continue to have strong ties to Kingman.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bert Leonard Sulenes; his mother, Anna Jeanette Gorrell; and his brother, Douglas Karr Gorrell.
The graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 9, 2024, at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Kingman, Kansas.
