Theresa A. Smith, 89, a longtime resident of rural Erie, passed away at 1:45 p.m., Monday, April 11, 2016 at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.
She was born June 17, 1926 in rural South Mound, Kansas to Charles H. and Sara Ellen (Brown) Steinbacher. As a young girl, Theresa grew up in the South Mound area and was a 1944 graduate of St. Francis High School in St. Paul. She then attended Neosho County Community College.
Through the years, she worked as a driver and EMT for Erie Ambulance Service, at Leon Crooks Photography and as administrative assistant at the Flynn Insurance Agency in Parsons, and assisted her husband with their farming and cattle operation.
She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie, past president of its Altar Society, and for many years was project leader in the Neosho County 4-H club. She loved spending time with her family and friends and attending her grandchildren's activities.
On March 4, 1946, she and Robert B. "Bob" Smith were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in South Mound. She was preceded in death by her husband on September 13, 2011.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond Steinbacher, Eugene Steinbacher, and Charles Steinbacher; one sister, Sara Grosdidier; and one grandchild.
The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 15, 2016 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery in St. Paul. The rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church where the family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
