Thomas W. "Tom" Whitten, 74, former Mound Valley and Coffeyville area resident, died at 7:42 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, at the Elmhaven East.
He was born Jan. 23, 1940, at Kankakee, Illinois, to William P. and Dorothy L.H. (Morrical) Whitten. He grew up and attended school in Illinois. He served in the United States Army from July 6, 1959, until July 5, 1965, then moved to Kansas in the late 1960s. He worked at the Acme Foundry in Coffeyville as a maintenance worker for several years.
He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Chanute and a former member of the American Legion.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Stammer of Chicago; a grandson, Brandon Stammer; two sisters, Delores Pearce of Chicago Heights, Illinois, and Mardell Veenstra of Mound Valley; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his close companion, Olive Hite; as well as two brothers and four sisters.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Mound Valley. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Military honors will be given by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Parsons. Burial of the cremains will be held at a later date in the Shrontz Cemetery at Momence, Illinois.
