Tom J. Hinman, 59, of rural Chetopa, died Wednesday evening, September 28, 2011, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.

He was born March 8, 1952, in Oswego, Kansas, to Claude Baynum and Zelma Mae (Russell) Hinman. He grew up and attended school in Oswego.

He served in the United States Army and had attained the rank of E6 and had been in field artillery. While serving his country, he was stationed in South Carolina for seven years as a Sr. Jumpmaster and also Germany.

For a time, he worked as a truck driver for SMX Trucking in Joplin and since 1997 had operated Poor Turkey Farm in rural Faulkner, Kansas.

He enjoyed hunting, watching war movies and visiting with family and friends. He also loved animals.

He and Paula Buffington were married August 22, 1969 in Joplin, Missouri. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oswego Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10:00 a.m., on Monday.

Memorials will be used to help defray funeral expense. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 346, Chetopa, KS 67336.
