Twylamae Mairs

Twylamae Mairs, 92, of Parsons, and formerly of Altamont, died at 9:20 a.m., Friday, November 7, 2014 at Parsons Presbyterian Manor.

She was born October 3, 1922 in Freedom, Oklahoma to John William and Eliza Ann (Ferguson) Starmer. As a young girl, she grew up in the Angola, Kansas area where she attended Emmons School and in 1940 graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont. She then attended Pittsburg State University, then known as State Manual Training Normal School. Prior to marriage, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse.

On January 31, 1942, she and Stephen H. Mairs were married in Cherryvale, Kansas. They then lived in Altamont where she taught third and fourth grades. In the 1960's, the couple owned and operated Steve's Café in Altamont. In 1971, they moved to Rapid City, South Dakota where she worked in a dress shop until returning to Altamont in 1984. Mr. Mairs preceded her in death on February 10, 2000.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Twylamae especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include one son, Stephen "Kent" Mairs, Georgetown, KY; one daughter, Sheryl Allmon, Evans City, PA; four grandchildren, Lauren (Vanmiddlesworth) McHugh, Quincy, IN, Lindsay Vanmiddlesworth, Alexandria, VA, Stephen A. Mairs, Winston-Salem, NC, and Ryan A. Mairs, Glasgow, KY; and one great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Mairs.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont.
