Valeria A. Bender, 93, of Chetopa, passed away at 6:45 p.m., Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at her home. She was a lifetime resident of the Chetopa area.

She was born May 12, 1913 to Auxel Richard and Mary Elizabeth (Wilhelm) Swanson of Chetopa. She was the next to the youngest of 12 children. She attended school in Chetopa and graduated from high school there in 1931. On August 19, 1931 she married John Bender. They moved to a farm south of Bartlett and remained there until after John's death. Her husband preceded her in death on December 31, 1993. She moved to Chetopa in 1994. During her marriage, she and her husband traveled – usually where Dolores, their daughter, lived.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Chetopa; a member of the W.W.W. Extension for 75 years (original branch of the Farm Bureau), now a member of National Association for Family and community Education. She was a seamstress, raised flowers, canned and won blue ribbons for her canning and sewing. She loved to read and especially enjoyed her visits with Father Larry Parker. She was active in Bartlett Community projects and served on the election board a number of years.

Survivors:
One Daughter: Dolores Reed and her husband, Warren of Joplin, Missouri
One Granddaughter: Victoria Lynn Reiswitz and her husband, Denis
Two Great Grandchildren: Brad Wellner and Pam Wellner
Three Great-Great-Grandchildren: Christopher Wellner, Peyton Heider and Natalie Chevalier
Numerous nieces and nephews and special friends

She was preceded in death by four brothers and seven sisters.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 31, 2006 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Chetopa with Father Larry Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Lake Creek Cemetery of Bartlett. The Rosary will be recited Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m., at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Community Hospices of America and may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, P.O.
