Verna L. Allen

March 31, 1916 — November 22, 2006

Verna L. Allen, 90, of Parsons, died Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at Elm Haven East Nursing Home in Parsons where she had resided since 1994.

She was born in rural Cherokee County, Kansas on March 31, 1916 to Delbert Claude and Alice Ethel (Zimmerman) Allen. As a young girl, she grew up and attended schools in that same area and was a 1934 graduate of Mineral High School.

For a time, she taught at a country school before graduating from Parsons Business University in 1939. She was an executive secretary and had worked for Chanute Production Credit Association before moving to Independence where she was employed by Sinclair. Following her retirement, she cared for her father until his death in 1985.

She was a member and past president of the Business and Professional Women and The Iris Society. She loved gardening.

She is survived by fifteen nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Maurice; two sisters, Geneva Redburn and Erville Madl; and one nephew, Paul Madl.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 27, 2006 at Borland Cemetery, near West Mineral. The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., Sunday, November 26, 2006 at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
