Victor L. George, 95, a longtime Altamont resident, died at 10:05 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Presbyterian Manor in Parsons.
He was born March 11, 1913, to Frank E. and Elizabeth (Kyle) George in Altamont where he resided until 2005 when he moved to Presbyterian Manor. He was the last survivor of his immediate family which was prominent in southeastern Kansas newspaper publishing.
Mr. George graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1930 and from Coffeyville Junior College in 1932. He spent the next eight years in professional baseball. His last six years in baseball were spent in the Boston Bees (now Atlanta Braves) organization as a player, coach and manager.
He was married to Charlotte Connely of Parsons on October 27, 1934. She preceded him in death on June 6, 2005. In 1946, they purchased the George Publications (Altamont Journal, Mound Valley Times-Journal and Edna Sun) from his father, Frank E. George, who had established the Altamont Journal in 1903. They sold the publications to Crowell Inc. in November 1968. After selling his business, Mr. George worked for The Parsons Sun, The Independence Reporter and for printing firms in Parsons and Independence before retiring in 1985.
Mr. George served as president of Labette County State Bank at one time and served on the bank's board of directors for over 50 years. He remained a director emeritus of the bank until his death. He served on the Altamont City Council for eight years and also served on the board of Altamont Grade School. He was a member of the Altamont United Methodist Church, was a charter member of the Altamont Lions Club and was also a member of the Farm Bureau.
Since his retirement, Mr. George enjoyed teaching Little League and high school boys (and their coaches) in the fundamentals of baseball. In 1991, he was honored as "Altamont Citizen of the Year" by the Lions Club for his contribution to the youth of the community. The high school baseball field at LCHS is named in his honor. He was also inducted into the Coffeyville Community College Football Hall of Fame in 1999, where he was described as one of the three finest athletes ever to play at the college.
Mr. George is survived by his daughter and her husband, Linda and Bill Mingle of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; by his granddaughter and her husband, Kerry and Brad Benson of Frederick, Oklahoma and by his grandson and his wife, Mark and Melissa Mingle of Norman, Oklahoma. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Rachel and Rebecca Benson, and Brooke and Ryan Mingle.
In addition to his parents, Mr. George was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Myron, William and Herbert (Skeet) George, all of whom were in the newspaper publishing business, and by his sister Colene McCarty.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. Friends may call at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home at their convenience.
