Violet M. Bates, 94, of Chetopa, passed away at 2:43 a.m., Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at the Chetopa Manor.
She was born on January 4, 1925, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Earnest Adolphus and Katie Katherine (Crome) Furnas. Violet grew up in the Pumpkin Creek area near Melrose, Kansas
As a young woman, she married George A. Schultz. The couple later divorced. On April 4, 1996, Violet and Warren F. Bates were married at the First Baptist Church in Chetopa. Warren preceded her in death on August 22, 2013.
Throughout her life, Violet worked as a cook. She cooked at the Old Mill Inn in Chetopa; owned and operated the Coffee Cup Café in Chetopa and was a cook and dietitian for the Head Start Program.
Violet was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Chetopa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren F. Bates on August 22, 2013; her parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 24, 2019 at the Chetopa High School New Gym. Burial will immediately follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 7 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.
