Vivian A. "Viv" Metcalf, 79, of Parsons, passed away at 4:17 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2021, at her home.
Vivian Arlene Sloan was born on April 12, 1941, to Raymond Carter and Grace Evelyn (Hill) Sloan in Attica, Kansas. When Viv was four months old, her mother passed away and she was then raised by her paternal grandparents, James Austen and Nora Ellen Sloan in Iola, Kansas. In 1959, Viv graduated from Iola High School. She continued her education earning a Bachelor's degree in Education from Kansas State University and later a Master's Degree in Community College Administration from Pittsburg State University.
In 1979, Viv began working at Labette Community College as an instructor. From 1985 until her retirement in 2000, she was the director of the Learning Center at LCC. Viv excelled in her profession. In the 1980's, she was named Educator of the Year and in 1990, she was named Director of the Year from the Kansas Department of Education.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Parsons in earlier years. Currently she was an active member of the Parsons Foursquare Church. Her late husband had also been an active member and the Ray Metcalf Memorial Chapel was built in the Philippines in his memory.
An avid gardener, Viv especially enjoyed raising irises. Next to her family, she had a great love for her dog, Murphy, the best dog she ever had.
On March 29, 1963, Viv and Raymond Edward Metcalf were united in marriage in Chanute. He preceded her in death on October 6, 1989.

Two sons – Raymond Sloan Metcalf of Parsons, Kansas
James Austen Metcalf and his wife, Kim, of Parsons, Kansas
Two daughters – Gina Yanez and her husband, Vince, of Parsons, Kansas
Niki Carnahan and her husband, Mike, of Parsons, Kansas
Seven grandchildren – Stephen Yanez, Austin Yanez, Joel Collins, Bailey Collins, Hayley Metcalf, Tyler Metcalf, and Hunter Metcalf
Six great-grandchildren – Blaise, Nevaeh, Ryder, S.J., Landyn, & Maci
One sister – Ethel Sparhawk of Beaverton, Oregon
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond Edward Metcalf; and one grandson, Preston Patton, on August 16, 2015.
The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons. Friends may sign the register from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home. The funeral service can be viewed live on the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home Facebook page. For all events, social distancing guidelines will be followed, including the requirement of face masks.
