Wanda Lee Hevel

Wanda L. Hevel, 92, of Oswego, died Saturday, July 8th at home with her family beside her. She was born January 4, 1931 in rural Chetopa to Jesse and Beatrice (Schertz) Eckles. She attended Piety Hill Elementary and graduated from Chetopa High School in 1949 as valedictorian of her class. She was married to William (Bill) Hevel on February 4, 1950 in Bentonville, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1985. They lived for a short time in Mound Valley and then moved to Oswego in 1951 where she has lived ever since.

She was a homemaker, worked at the abstract office and later at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. She was an active member of the Oswego Christian Church for over 70 years. She was involved as a volunteer in many community activities including Girl Scouts, Red Cross, St. Johns Hospice, Meals on Wheels, and Oswego Hospital pink ladies.

Other survivors include: one son, Michael (Cindy) Hevel of Waverly, KS ; two daughters, Susan Souders (Buddy) of Altamont, KS and Laura Kaiser (Larry) of Plano, TX; one sister Luella Paine of Bartonville, TX; four grandsons, Michael Hevel, Ray Fisk, Josh Hevel, Matt Hevel and five granddaughters, Sondra Hall, Daphne Flores, Macey Foster, Emily Freeman, Erin Hecker and numerous great and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by; infant son, John William Hevel, two brothers and one sister.

The family will receive friends Thursday, July 13 from 6pm-8pm at Oswego Christian Church.  Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, July 14th at Oswego Christian Church. Burial will be in the Oswego Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to either the Oswego Christian Church or the American Red Cross.
