Warren Frank Bates

Warren Frank "Pops" Bates, 92, died at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the Chetopa Manor Nursing Home in Chetopa. He had been in failing health.

He was born July 16, 1921 at Oswego to George Franklin Bates and Bertha Elzina (Day) Bates. He grew up and attended schools in the Oswego area.

He joined the United States Air Force and served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Mr. Bates was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star among many other medals. He retired from the Air Force after 27 years of service.
Following his retirement he lived in Chetopa.

He married Vertalee L. Turnbough on December 14, 1942. She preceded him in death on June 27, 1994. He married Violet Marie (Furnace) Schultz on April 27, 1996 in Chetopa. They enjoyed traveling together. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Chetopa and, prior to marriage to Violet, was active in the Assembly of God Church in Chetopa.
He also enjoyed spending time in his wood-working shop where he made many gifts for his family.

Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vertalee; one brother and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 26, 2013 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, August 25 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.
