Wilbur Michael Hahn, 92, of Bartlett, died at 9:00 p.m., Thursday, January 18, 2007 at the Oswego Medical Center.
He was born May 22, 1914, in their family home west of Bartlett, to Henry Michael and Cora (Crane) Hahn. He attended Lake Creek School through the 8th grade at which time he joined his dad in farming and ranching.
Wilbur lived his entire life on the Hahn farm which was homesteaded in the 1860's. He had plowed ground with mules, driven buggies down through Lake Creek before there was a road to town, rode horses, thrashed grain with the old-time thrashers, tied wheat into bundles and threw them on wagons and hauled grain on wagons pulled by mules and horses. He loved seeing the crops and cattle grow. In his later years, he enjoyed his John Deere tractors and equipment.
He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II as a sergeant in Okinawa. He taught marksmanship shooting, trained many men and was an expert in small arms. He was in the 610 Tank Destroyer Unit.
He was a member of the Bartlett United Methodist Church, The American Legion, Masonic Lodge of Edna, Scottish Rite, The Mirza Temple in Pittsburg, Kansas, the Bartlett Coop and the Labette County Farm Bureau. On December 28, 1944, he and Eloise Stice were married in the Chetopa Methodist parsonage in Chetopa, Kansas. They recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.
