William Edward "Bill" Carter, 63, of Chetopa, went to be with the Lord on the morning of Friday, February 20, 2015, following a courageous battle with brain cancer.
He was born on July 14, 1951 in Oswego, Kansas to Robert G. Carter, Sr. and Wilma (Meriweather) Carter. Bill was raised in Chetopa, Kansas and later graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville, Kansas in 1969. Bill continued his education at Coffeyville Community College and later graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1974 with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. Upon graduating from college, Bill worked in the insurance industry, concluding his career with Nationwide Insurance after 25 years of service.
In 1972, he married Donna (Short) Eads. They later divorced. In 1998, he married his soulmate, Roberta Wilson.
Bill loved spending time with his family. He was a kind and loving husband and a devoted father to his boys. He especially treasured spending time with his grandchildren.
His hobbies included leather work, walking, reading, hunting, and fishing. Bill had many cherished memories camping with his family in the Rocky Mountains. He loved his community and enjoyed coaching Chetopa Little League baseball during his sons' youth.
Survivors include his dedicated wife, Roberta, of the home; sons, William "Billy" Carter and wife, Chelsea, Chetopa, KS, Benjamin "Benny" Carter and wife, Amber, Choctaw, OK, Robert "Bobby" Carter and wife, Amber, Columbus, KS, Donald "Donny" Carter and wife, Karrie, Columbus, KS, and Levi Lashbrook, Chetopa, KS; grandchildren, Leyton, Alex, Harrison and Madison, Jack, Rusty, Embry, Reese, Cam, Gracyn and Austin; his mother, Wilma Carter, Chetopa, KS; siblings, Bob Carter and his wife, Ruth, Chetopa, KS, Mike Carter and his wife, Shirley, Oswego, KS, Andy Carter and his wife, Naomi, Chetopa, KS, Janet Blackledge and her husband, Steve, Chetopa, KS; sister-in-law, Brenda Carter, Chetopa, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert G. Carter, Sr.; mother-in-law, Nellie Pearl Wilson; and a brother, Mark A. Carter, Sr.
Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Chetopa with Michael Carter officiating.
