William F. "Bill" Shields

William F. "Bill" Shields, 57, of Altamont, died at 6:40 a.m., Sunday, December 19, 2010, at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

He was born July 13, 1953, in Chanute, Kansas, to Charles E. and Janice (Long) Shields. He grew up and attended schools in Cherryvale where he graduated high school.

Through the years he worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant and the MK&T Railroad until becoming employed in 1977 by KDOT and was presently working as a heavy equipment operator. He had lived in the Cherryvale, Mound Valley and rural Parsons areas until moving to Altamont in 1982.

He had served as secretary of the Oswego Golf Club Association and coached Little League baseball for numerous years. He also had served as president of the Altamont Summer League ball program. He enjoyed golf, photography, nature and model trains. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He and Mary Wilson were married March 24, 1974 in Erie, Kansas. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the First Baptist Church in Altamont. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 325, Altamont, KS 67330.
