William E. "Bill" Shields, 87, a longtime resident of Parsons, died at 1:25 p.m., Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at the Presbyterian Manor, where he had resided since June 8, 2007. He had been in failing health for the past few months.
He was born December 20, 1919 in Parsons, a son of Robert W. Shields and Zelpha M. (Dinger) Shields. He grew up and attended schools in Parsons. For a short time, he lived in Wichita before returning to Parsons. He worked as a machinist and road maintainer for the M-K-T Railroad from 1941 to 1979.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of the First Foursquare Church in Parsons. He was also a member and past quartermaster of the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed rebuilding tractors, gardening, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed playing music and had won numerous fiddle contests in the past. He also enjoyed volunteering for the Angel Food ministries.
He and Thelma F. Divine were married May 21, 1940 in Labette City. She preceded him in death August 20, 2004.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Baldwin, who died in 1999; a brother, Robert "Bobby" Shields, Jr., and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 25, 2007, at the First Foursquare Church. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery, with military honors given by Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m., Sunday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to either "Katy Days" or the Iron Horse Historical Society.
