Wilma H. Carter

Wilma H. Carter, 97, of Chetopa, passed away the evening of Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at Oswego Health and Rehab.

Wilma Helen Meriweather was born on May 4, 1927, to John Austin "Jack" and Grace (Shrum) Meriweather in rural Chetopa.

Caring for others was Wilma's life work, whether it be working as a certified nurse's aide or making a comfortable and loving home for her family. She also worked with her mother and daughter at Dave's in Chetopa for a number of years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chetopa, where she enjoyed growing in her faith in Christ through bible study and fellowship.

Survivors include:

Three sons – Robert G. "Bob" Carter and his wife, Ruth, of Chetopa, Kansas

John Michael "Mike" Carter and his wife, Shirley, of Oswego, Kansas

Clyde Andrew "Andy" Carter and his wife, Naomi, of Chetopa, Kansas

One daughter – Janet Elaine Blackledge and her husband, Steve, of Chetopa, Kansas

Two daughters-in-law – Roberta Carter of Chetopa, Kansas

Brenda Carter of Chetopa, Kansas

Seventeen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren

One sister – Jackie Boyle and her husband, Wayne, of Independence, Kansas

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Carter; sons; William Edward "Bill" Carter and Mark Allen Carter; one granddaughter, Amanda Moore; great grandson, Mark Carter II and twin infant brothers.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the First Baptist Church of Chetopa.  Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa.  The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 until the service begins at the church.
