Wilma Lorene Wilson

November 27, 1922 — February 1, 2015

Wilma Lorene Wilson of Chetopa, Kansas, passed away at 12:26a.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2015. Wilma had been living at The Cedars Nursing Home in McPherson, Kansas since December.

Born on November 27, 1922, Wilma was the daughter of William Francis Tomey and Cecelia Telfor (Foster) Tomey. She was born at home in rural Bartlett, Kansas, the youngest of five children. Her brothers and sister were Nellie Harris, Merle Tomey, Lloyd Tomey, and Hal Tomey. The Tomey children thrived in their home and attended the Country School at Baylor – District 98.

On December 22, 1941, Wilma married sweetheart Chester Lloyd Wilson at Labette City. Chester soon left to support his country in World War II. While he was away, Wilma worked as a riveter at the Boeing Aircraft plant in Wichita.

Sadly, her brother Hal F. Tomey was killed in an airplane crash in Italy at the end of World War II.

After Chester returned at the end of the war, they rejoiced at the birth of their first daughter, Connie Louise, then their second, Linda Lorene. Wilma and Chester lived on and farmed the Tomey place in rural Bartlett for many happy years. The couple was thrilled to have their third daughter, Judy Lynn.

In 1966, the family moved to their new farm just outside Chetopa, Kansas. After moving to Chetopa, Wilma worked for Sohigro Service Company as a bookkeeper. Around 1970, Wilma attended night classes at Oswego and earned her GED. After they retired, Wilma and Chester remained on their farm until Chester's death on August 6, 2003. Wilma continued to live on the farm, in the home Chester had built for her, until December of 2014, when she moved to McPherson.

Family remained a constant reassurance throughout Wilma's life. In addition to their three daughters, Chester and Wilma have five grandchildren, Stacy Marie McTarnahan, Brian Travis Mitchell, Michelle Elizabeth D'Amico, Samuel Patrick Waleska, and Hayley Kathleen Waleska. Wilma also has four great-grandchildren.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her son-in-law, Ron Mitchell, and her husband. She is survived by her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, February 6, 2015 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Her burial will be in Lake Creek Cemetery near Bartlett. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 pm, Thursday, at the funeral home.
